Issue Position: Faith in Families

Issue Position

The Destiny of Families Are Our Common Destiny

Modern life is complicated and challenging in 2016. We live in a globalized world and the pressure on corporate and government leaders pales in comparison to damage that is happening in the American family due to economic, social, and spiritual changes. Kentucky is not immune.

Kentucky families, already impacted by the Great Recession, are struggling to make a productive life. US News and World Report issues an annual Best Places ranking that placed Louisville, KY at #45 of the 100 most populated metros. The methodology includes so-called quality of life measures. Anecdotally and measurably, Kentucky has trailed the nation in many competitive measures in these areas.

By taking seriously the value of happy and engaged families, by putting our confidence in their abilities, initiatives, and gumption, we can lift our Commonwealth to higher standards of living. Families are the social building block for our society, so it stands to reason that solving their problems aggregates to solutions to bigger, seemingly intractable problems.

Proposed programs

Fuzzy Cutoff for Young Families. Increase support of young working families with children, without penalizing for marriage and early career success.
Old Houses, New Home. Stabilize our current housing stock by preserving existing structures for working class families
Senior Connection. Construct additional senior living infrastructure within existing neighborhoods, near families.
Reform CPS. Re-evaluate the standards of child removal procedures.

Endorsed bills and legislation

HB385: AN ACT relating to child custody.

If our Commonwealth is instead lead into distraction, foregoing aid to rank-and-file families, we stand the risk of falling further behind as the stakes are heightening. People are more engaged, more mobile, and more informed of the options of where to live, work, and play. Generations stand the risk of relocating from or choosing not to locate in our state. This is the hallmark of a deteriorating Commonwealth.
